Equipment
Ingredients
Dry Ingredients
- 1/2 cup whole wheat flour
- 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 tsp baking soda
- 2 tbsp nutritional yeast
- 1/2 tsp sea salt
Wet Ingredients
- 1/4 cup canola oil
- 1/2 cup water
- 1/4 cup unsweetened soy milk
- 1 tbsp apple cider vinegar
- 1 tbsp beetroot powder
Dog-Friendly Hummus Frosting
- 250 g boiled chickpeas
- 2 medium potatoes, boiled until tender
- 1 tsp beetroot powder
- 2 tbsp tahini
- 1 pinch sea salt
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 180ยบC/356ยบF.
- In a large bowl, combine all the dry ingredients.
- In a small bowl, combine all the wet ingredients.
- Pour the wet ingredients into the bowl with the dry ingredients and mix through.
- Line a 6-cup cupcake pan with 6 cupcake liners. Fill them about two-thirds full with batter. Bake for 20 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the centre of the cupcake comes out dry with a few crumbs clinging to it.
- Let the cupcakes cool completely before adding the frosting.
Dog-Friendly Hummus Frosting
- In a food processor, combine the boiled chickpeas, boiled potatoes, beetroot powder, tahini, and sea salt, and process until very smooth and creamy.
- Pour the contents of the food processor into a bowl and refrigerate for 2 hours or until the mixture is cold. The more you refrigerate it, the more consistent and thicker the frosting will become, and the more it will hold its shape when piped onto the cupcakes.
- Spoon the frosting into a piping bag with a star nozzle and pipe it using a spiralling motion onto the cupcakes in a large swirl.
- Now they are ready to be devoured by your dogs! They will love them!
- If you have small dogs like we do, cut the cupcakes into smaller pieces to make it easier for them to handle!
- Store in the refrigerator, in a sealed container, for up to 5 days.

I made them for my dogs 15th birthday. Her and my younger dog loved them and were begging, barking, and jumping for more than one!
It was Cocoโs 3rd birthday today. I wanted something homemade so I knew that it was healthy. She was so patient as I took pictures but once I gave the word, the pupcakes didnโt stand a chance. She devoured them. I will definitely be making these again. The hummus frosting was her favorite part. It was the first to go. Thanks so much for sharing this recipe.
My dogs love these- they demolished them!

Hello
Can I refrigerate with them frosted or do I have to only frost them right before serving? Was hoping I could make and frost to keep them handy .
Thank you
Hi Missy,
Yes, you can definitely refrigerate the pupcakes with the frosting on them. We refrigerate them for up to 3-5 days and they always stay moist and delicious. Just make sure to place them in a sealed container! Hope your dogs will love these pupcakes as much as ours do!
